Ken chose to become a doctor initially because of his love for science and maths. However, it was really at medical school that he realised that medicine was so much more, seeing the difference that a doctor can make in someone’s life; whether it was giving them the treatment that relived their symptoms, or listening and supporting them through a difficult time.
The main highlights of his career are becoming a partner in his local surgery and the enjoyment of being involved in the daily decision making of the practice as well as taking responsibility for the wellbeing of his patients and staff. Ken also feels lucky to be able to work in other roles, such as Heartbeat, which expand his knowledge and abilities into other areas.
He is most proud of the work done to integrate other healthcare roles into primary care in our area, especially with the Heartbeat clinical pharmacist team. It has been a real privilege to see them develop their skills and confidence and become such an integral part of the primary care team.
Jayne started her career working for a chartered accountancy firm before specialising in GP accounts. She quickly became good at, and known for, trouble shooting, working within GP practices before eventually becoming self-employed to service the practices. Her passion and expertise grew from there and she became a Practice Manager, whilst also consulting, before securing the position of Federation Manager.
Jayne has had many career highlights over the years including her consultancy work where she would go into a practice to review procedures, engaging with staff to help the practice to implement change. She is defined by her passion for her work and has taken that passion into every role she has performed. Doing a great job for Jayne starts and ends with people, by really listening and supporting them whether that be at home or at work. Spending quality time with her family is vital to her.
Stephen first moved into healthcare in the mid-1990s as a qualified accountant when the NHS was starting to professionalise the financial management of NHS trusts. He had a calling to apply his accountancy skills and senior finance track record to make a real difference in the management of local healthcare.
In the past 20 years Stephen has realised that difference, becoming Managing Partner for two GP practices and being the founding director and first CEO of Heartbeat. He headed up the Heartbeat team that delivered £2.3m of the Prime Minister’s Challenge Fund projects.
He is most proud of commissioning the original strategic level report that eventually led to the project to develop the Catterick Integrated Care Campus which is on target to open in 2024. This is the first development of its kind as it integrates NHS community and primary healthcare with Defence healthcare, not just co-locating teams but designed for them to work together to deliver care to the local civilian and armed forces population.
Stephen cares deeply about the environment and the interconnectedness of our planet and all those who live on it. He is a keen gardener and walker and is driven by the love for his family and being able to use whatever skills he has to make a positive difference.
Hazel made a career change from practising law from a desire to help people and make them happy. During this transition she became a Medical Student Clinical Supervisor and, alongside qualifying as a GP, her career highlights are helping to deliver a baby on Christmas Day and the wonderful patients and colleagues she has worked with so far.
Hazel is most proud of a clinical diagnosis where she spotted a vertebral artery dissection which might have otherwise been missed, her resilience to not giving up and making a difference.
Outside of work Hazel loves hiking and is a history fanatic, especially from 1500 onwards. She is currently building a Georgian doll’s house for her children and is driven by her personal values of equality, fairness and honesty and the love of her family. Hazel prides herself on doing her best, making people smile and her determination.
Andy’s passion for medicine started back at school with his natural interest in and aptitude for science. His decision to become a GP was influenced by a variety of work experience but more so by his time serving in the Royal Navy, where he looked after the heath of the ship’s company for months at a time. Andy thrives on the longer-term relationships developed with patients.
Aside from his commitment to Heartbeat’s mission, Andy loves to be with his family and in the great outdoors, especially cycling.
Lynn was seeking a career change from conveyancing and was attracted to the challenge of practice management and the desire to help make a difference to people’s lives. During her career Shirley has had many proud moments, including being shortlisted for a Health Service Journal award for the service redesign of a local hospital, being the regional winner of the Emerging Leader of the Year by the NHS Leadership Academy and gaining two Healthcare Leadership Post Grad Certificates.
Outside of work Shirley loves all types of crafting, which forms part of her focus on work-life balance, wellbeing and her closeness to her family and friends.
In 1974 Steve was caddying at a local golf club and a local GP told him there was ‘very little chance’ he would become a doctor. So started Steve’s career in medicine. He scraped into university, scraped through his degree and fluked his way on to the GP training scheme in Leeds, where he started to realise the validity of the old adage ‘you pass your test, then learn to drive’.
In 1990, after qualifying as a GP he moved to Australia with a girl he had met four weeks earlier. He intended to go for one year but ended up spending 11 years there, getting married (to the same girl) and having two kids, before returning to England in 2001 and taking up a partnership in Leyburn. Whilst in Australia he developed an interest in primary care delivery and became CEO of a local GP organisation in Brisbane before becoming a primary care advisor on mental health for Queensland.
After returning to the UK he continued in this vein by becoming Medical Director of the PCT, then Chair of the Practice Based Commissioning body. Over this time he also developed skills in GP training and vasectomy.
In 2014 Leyburn Medical Practice was asked to take on the contract for Harewood Medical Practice. Steve took on the role of lead for this process, which completed in 2015. Once the practice had been stabilised and made financially viable, the contract was transferred to Heartbeat and Steve now divides his time between being a GP, performing vasectomies and being a director for Heartbeat.
Over the years Steve has been a keen runner, swimmer and cyclist, completed a marathon, cycled a stage of the Tour de France, cycled from John O’Groats to Land’s End and finished several triathlons. Nowadays, however, he mainly does crosswords on his iPad and eats pies!
